The Vessel
76 feet of double-ended steel, built in Whangarei in 1965. The steel turned up at 3/8 inch instead of the specified 1/4 inch - she's been sitting a little lower in the water than designed ever since. Always more than she was meant to be.
She worked the Opua-Okiato car ferry run for nearly 20 years. Crossed the Hokianga as the Rawhiti. In 1999 Peter and Stacee Honey saw something else in her, attached a caravan to the deck, and sailed her back to the Bay. Three years of conversion later, she became New Zealand's biggest houseboat and the only overnight cruise in the Bay of Islands.
