Kahawai

Also popular as Australian Salmon.

What you need to know about Kahawai

Kahawai (Australian Salmon) is an underrated saltwater fish commonly found in NZ waters. Early European settlers called them Salmon due to similarities; scientifically Arripis Trutta - "trout like" - and called by its Maori name "Kahawai".

Fishing for Kahawai in the Bay

Local Kiwis fish for Kahawai all year round. They take bait almost immediately, making them an easy catch for beginners. They're strong fish - leaping in and out of the water trying to get away. Once anchored in a quiet bay we run dusk fishing with the crew. We provide the bait and gear. Fingers crossed for a fresh Kahawai on the dinner menu.

How we prepare Kahawai on The Rock

Firm pink meat - great eaten raw or barbecued. Kahawai Sashimi - sliced thin with soy and wasabi - is the sweetest reward after a day fishing in the Bay.
